  TITLE: A Solitary Effort: Fundraising With a Department of One

On the tiny budgets of the smallest nonprofit organizations, many of us are forced to work on our own. It is a daunting task to make money from a shoestring budget. A solitary fundraiser must know how to prioritize his or her activities and how to squeeze the most effort out of each dollar in the budget. Attendees will learn how to keep the smaller departments effective and running smoothly. This session with cover topics like:

   
1.   Keep on track: How to create and maintain a year–round financial plan for optimal fundraising.
2.   How is researching different in a department of one?
3.   Third Party: How outsourcing your direct mailings can save you time and bring in plenty of money.
4.   Donor Solicitation: How to streamline the solicitation process from research to acquiring a significant gift.
5.   Planned giving: How to organize gifts through bequests and wills.
6.   Leadership Involvement: How the involvement of the board is much more important, and how they will change the course of a small nonprofit.
 

Speaker Profile

Judy Ozbun
Vice President, Strategic Partnerships
New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI)
Judy Ozbun is the Vice President of Strategic Partnerships at the New England Healthcare Institute (NEHI).  She brings to the role extensive experience in corporate philanthropy, charitable contributions and social responsibility programs, as well as non-profit board leadership.  Her expertise in 21st century strategic philanthropy and corporate community investment is founded on years of strong and successful relationship and infrastructure development. Prior to joining NEHI, Ms. Ozbun established the global community relations operations at Genzyme Corporation.  During her 11 years with the company, she negotiated and managed a $2M partnership with the Museum of Science, Boston to invest in biotechnology education programs; led senior executive committees in corporate responses to major disasters such as 9/11, Asian Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina; and created the company’s employee-driven volunteer program, which is a model of giving for the life sciences industry.  

Her leadership in the business community includes engagement with the Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College, where she was an inaugural member of the Community Investment Leadership Roundtable.  Previously, she served on the board of directors of the Cambridge Chamber of Commerce, where she chaired the Community Outreach Committee.  During her tenure, she led the development of two publications that are still in use today— Community Involvement is Good for Business and Best Practices Handbook: A Guide to Community Outreach in Cambridge

Ms. Ozbun makes presentations regularly at forums and conferences, some of which include Harvard University Social Enterprise Conference, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Women in Development, The Center for Corporate Citizenship at Boston College, the Biotechnology Institute, and the Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO).Ms. Ozbun has over fifteen years of experience in human resources, community outreach and strategic philanthropy.  She holds an MBA from Boston University and a Bachelor of Arts degree in English from the University of Wyoming.
