  TITLE: A Solitary Effort: Fundraising With a Department of One

On the tiny budgets of the smallest nonprofit organizations, many of us are forced to work on our own. It is a daunting task to make money from a shoestring budget. A solitary fundraiser must know how to prioritize his or her activities and how to squeeze the most effort out of each dollar in the budget. Attendees will learn how to keep the smaller departments effective and running smoothly. This session with cover topics like:

   
1.   Keep on track: How to create and maintain a year–round financial plan for optimal fundraising.
2.   How is researching different in a department of one?
3.   Third Party: How outsourcing your direct mailings can save you time and bring in plenty of money.
4.   Donor Solicitation: How to streamline the solicitation process from research to acquiring a significant gift.
5.   Planned giving: How to organize gifts through bequests and wills.
6.   Leadership Involvement: How the involvement of the board is much more important, and how they will change the course of a small nonprofit.
 

Speakers Profile

Barry A. McEwen, M.Ed., CFRE
Vice President of Development
Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY)
For the last 5 years, Barry has been the Vice President of Development for Specialized Alternatives for Families and Youth (SAFY) of America, a Treatment Foster Care and Adoption agency whose corporate office are in Delphos Ohio.  SAFY serves over 3,600 children annually through 27 offices in the 8 states of Alabama, Indiana, Kentucky, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas.  Barry is a generalist who services all 27 offices.

Prior to working for SAFY Barry has worked for the Rutherford B Hayes Presidential Center, Junior Achievement, Brush Wellman (a for profit entity), and Lutheran Social Services of the Miami Valley (Dayton).  For 18 years Barry was the President and CEO of the Toledo Society for the Blind/The Sight Center.  He has also worked for the Lucas Count Board of Mental Retardation, the Vision Center of Central Ohio, and the State of Ohio.

He is a past president of the Toledo Chapter of AFP (and its most senior member, joining in 1987) and a CFRE since 1989.  He is a past president of the TORCH Club of Toledo, the Maumee Lions Club, and a founder of the Ohio Association of Nonprofit Organizations (OANO).

Steve Suskin has been a professional fundraiser since 1985. He has worked in the arts, higher education, early childhood education, international relief, HIV/AIDS service, and spent five years as an independent consultant working around the U.S. for various nonprofit clients.  Prior to his fundraising career, he served as an academic dean at a business college, and sold computers to colleges and universities in Michigan. He has lived in Cincinnati since 1994.
