TITLE: Black Ties, Silent Auctions & Walk-a-Thons: Special Event Fundraising
  CITY: Cincinnati
  DATE: Sept 15th 2009
  Time: 8:30am-9:45am

Getting your nonprofit into the public’s mind isn’t a simple task, but organizing a special event is an excellent way to accomplish it. Through special events you can recruit new volunteers, educate the community about your group, and solicit fresh donors in a casual atmosphere. Attendees will learn how to make any event, from bake sales to Gala Dinners, a real success, and how to know how much of an event they can pull off. This session is an intermediate to advanced course, but newcomers will learn a great deal as well. Covered topics will include:

1.   Is It Right: Is it the right event for your organization? Is your organization right for an event? What are the pros and cons of holding one of the many types of events?
2.   What To Do: Concerts, art shows, sports tournaments, displays, award ceremonies, formal dinner, and so much more!
3.   What Are We Looking At: How much should you expect to make from an event? How much will you have to spend first?
4.   Should you underwrite? Will you need a corporate sponsor?
5.   Shout it Out: How are you going to market your event? What is your target market, and how will you reach them?

Hikmet Kutlu
National Director of Development
The Grottoes of North America Humanitarian Foundation

Hikmet Kutlu joined The Humanitarian Foundation as their National Director of Development 18 months ago and moved to Columbus, Ohio from Indianapolis, Indiana.  The Humanitarian Foundation brings dental care to children with special needs across the US and Canada serving nearly 1,500 children annually with a staff of 2 ½ FTE as all the work is done locally in communities across the country by the members of Freemasons affiliated The Grottoes of North America.  Dental care for children with special needs is the leading unmet health care need in the US.

Most of Hikmet’s career has been in health care; prior to his current job he completed 16 years of service as the Executive Director of Clarian Health’s HealthNet Foundation supporting HealthNet Community Health Centers’ vital community mission of providing high quality, affordable health care to those who can’t afford it, but need it most.  A native of Turkey, Hikmet was the CEO of American Hospital of Istanbul for ten years prior to moving to Indianapolis.

Having to report directly to the board almost at any job Hikmet had provided a wealth of experience for him working with boards.  Twice at two different jobs he has helped found advisory boards to aid the board of governors in fundraising.

Hikmet also has extensive experience in special event fundraising; his signature event, Grand Bazaar," featuring a different world culture each year was a major event in Indianapolis 16 years in a row.
