TITLE: Major Gifts: The Art of One-on-One Solicitation
  CITY: Milwaukee
  DATE: Sept 16th 2009
  Time: 8:30am-9:45am
Eighty-five percent of the donor base for nonprofits in the United States can be attributed to individuals, according to recent surveys. It is a very simple but it is a daunting task, because the best way to get these significant contributions is to simply ask for them. Asking for money is a delicate art, however. Do you have the skills, training, and immense self-confidence it requires? This session will be divided into two parts:
This session will teach you the subtle science of one-on-one solicitation. You’ll know what questions to ask and you’ll have a chance to sit down with your peers to role-play and to discuss what does and does not work. After this session, you’ll have a script and a demeanor that will enable you to acquire successfully major gifts and have a solid solicitation strategy. This session is intended for intermediate to advanced fundraisers but Associates will learn a great deal as well. Covered topics will include:

1. What to say, and what never to say.
2. The prerequisites of your own major gifts program.
3. The best ways to cultivate and solicit major gifts from the resources you already have, and you to develop new connections.
4. How your team needs to be prepared to ask efficiently.

Speakers Profile

David LeDuc
Executive Director
The Wisconsin Foundation

David LeDuc has been the Executive Director of The Wisconsin Foundation since its inception in July, 2008. Prior to his current position, David has been with Edgewood High School, the American Cancer Society, Sentry Insurance and Chase Bank, serving a variety of roles. During his time in the non-profit world David has achieved numerous awards and distinctions including earning his Certified Fund Raising Executive designation, a certificate in Non-Profit management from the University of Illinois-Chicago, being named a Board member and certification chair for the Madison Association of Fundraising Professionals, and winning three distinguished service awards from the American Cancer Society.

In his 18 years of fundraising and marketing David has learned how to take an organization’s Mission Statement and turn it into the foundation of all outreach efforts. He firmly believes the Mission Statement should be the “filter” by which decisions are made and the driving force in day to day operations. In addition, David has become a leading proponent of the Relationship Solution to fundraising and marketing, hosting classes and seminars across the state on this one of a kind approach.
“Too many organizations forget why they are in business. More importantly, from a marketing perspective, they forget how to tell people why they are in business, focusing more on process versus outcomes. Your Mission Statement should be the story not your business plan.”
