2009 represents my 25th year working in the non-profit sector with 18 years as Executive Director, providing leadership for all resource development activities. For five years, I was a full-time employee of United Way of Chicago’s Agency Services Division. At that time, UW-C was the largest local United Way in the US and the only one with this division that reached out to struggling community-based, human service organizations. My work involved the provision of all types of support services to assist these groups in strengthening their organizational infrastructure, and this certainly involved financial vigor and independence. In size, they ranged from small “kitchen table” operations that were barely an idea or concept, to large, multi-million dollar, established organizations with many programs.
For the last four and a half years, I have worked for a mid-size youth development organization as the Chief Development Officer. My role has been to lead the strategic direction of the company’s resource development agenda. This has included everything from planning, research, marketing and outreach, team coordination, RFP preparation to evaluation and reporting. I have experienced a high level of success with appeals to local, state and federal sources, foundations and corporations, special events and through individual donor and sponsorship campaigns. This work has involved close collaboration with marketing and public relations as the underpinnings of all effective fund-raising efforts.
In all of these years of experience, my work has involved extensive engagement in planning and delivering training and development programs for all levels of staff and volunteers. My customized, original training programs have focused on strategic planning, leadership and supervision, Board development, fund-raising and team-building. I have a graduate degree in adult learning and development and have been instrumental in the planning and implementation of graduate level degree programs at three universities in the Chicago area.
